Prison Ministry

This is truly one of the most rewarding projects that we are involved in. The impact that Vedanta makes on the lives of inmates is utterly profound and transformative. That the Atman/Soul is ever pure and ever free; that we are nonetheless responsible for all that happens in our lives; that the negative tendencies developed over lifetimes can be dissolved by Self-Realization - teachings such as these empower and transform the minds of all beings, and no less so for those whose actions and karma have placed them in prison. Nearly all our students have the same realization once they encounter the Vedanta, "I do not regret this prison experience, for it has brought me to these teachings." The prison for them has become an ashram.

We currently offer a regular program of Vedanta classes and personal spiritual instruction at three Oregon prisons, two for men and one for women. Additionally, SRV provides the following instructional materials free of charge to inmates and prisons in Oregon and other states:

  • Books, audio teachings and devotional music for prison libraries and individual inmates
  • The Raja Yoga email class is offered (via U.S. mail) to inmates throughout the U.S.
  • Nectar of Nondual Truth, SRV's journal of universal religious and philosophical teachings is given to inmates as well as to the prison chapel libraries
  • Ongoing spiritual correspondence and even phone calls (which are collect to us)

Our "Wish list":

  • Put Nectar in prison libraries throughout the U.S. and make it more available to inmates.
  • Provide a well-rounded "start-up" Vedanta library to as many prisons as possible. This would include books as well as teaching audios.
Your donations will make it possible to create a fund just for prison ministry, thereby enabling us to both continue this work and deepen/expand its scope.

Nectar of Non-dual Truth

A Journal of Universal Religious and Philosophical Teachings

Nectar, first published in the Fall of 2000, is the "longest arm" of our spiritual service, finding its way into countries around the world and in U.S. prisons. Its message of experiential Advaita, Nondual Reality, read more which is at the foundation of all religious traditions, is offered in the spirit of world ecumenism and mutual understanding. Most of all, Nectar of Non-Dual Truth is for inspiring its readers to sincerely gather their energies and orient all earthly endeavors for the purpose of realizing our Infinite Nature, the one Self in all beings. This alone will conduce to both the material well-being and highest good of all people.

To this end we publish articles from teachers and practitioners of the different world traditions, feature "Nectar of Advaitic Instruction," a question and answer column written by SRV's Spiritual Director, Babaji Bob Kindler, and review books from different religious and philosophical perspectives upholding the theme of Ultimate Unity.

Nectar is distributed free of charge to spiritual centers around the U.S., India and other countries, to prison inmates, and low income persons. All pre-press production is accomplished by volunteers. A very small percentage of our costs, only 16%, are met by subscriptions; the rest is covered by a few funders who believe in Nectar's mission. However, this does not provide a budget with which to improve and extend our outreach.

Our Nectar "wish list":

  • Place Nectar in many more prison libraries and make it available to a greater number of inmates throughout the U.S.
  • Place Nectar in community, college, and university libraries.
  • Increase our publishing frequency to 3 times a year.
  • Receive the assistance of a periodical specialist to help us with outreach
  • Hire a graphic artist
  • Replace old equipment

Book Publishing

We consider publishing a sacred responsibility. Swami Vivekananda stated that Westerners should teach Westerners the Vedanta. 114 years have passed since he gave the West its first authentic transmission of Vedanta and Yoga. This intervening period has witnessed the gradual development in the numbers and depth of Western individuals who have assimilated these teachings and received the grace to transmit them authentically to others via the indispensable twin modes of essence and scripture. Babaji Bob Kindler is one of these qualified Western teachers whose training is based in the Ramakrishna lineage, which is known for its undeniable purity and comprehensive philosophical perspective.

Our books are funded by donations, which only cover basic printing costs. All writing, editing, proofing, layout and design are done by volunteers. Distribution is handled by a major distributor: on the positive side, this makes our books available to a wider audience than we could manage on our own; the down side is that it decreases considerably the proceeds from each book. Whatever income is derived from these books is funneled back into SRV's various service projects.
